The driving mileage also dropped by 85 miles and saved 2 1/2 hours of route time. Just click on any ETA link in the left sidebar to show orders for a single route day. Use the Quick Route dialog to optimize and get driving directions in seconds. When everything’s ready, just print from your browser and hand it to the driver.

Using Quick Route

From the Route Planning tab, you’ll see an area called “Driving Directions”. Select a date from the calendar and Headlight will display available routes and total orders on each route. Directions can be printed for any or all of the available routes at the same time. Each route book appears as a new tab or window (depending on your browser ), so it’s easy to review each route separately.

When everything’s ready, just print from your browser and hand it to the driver.

It’s very simple to use. Just click on any ETA link in the left sidebar. Headlight will instantly filter the view to only show deliveries on the same route and date (i.e. one route day). The matching route path shows every stop in sequence. It’s a great way to quickly see how a route is being driven.

The A through Z map markers represent each stop in the path. A is the 1st stop, B is the 2nd stop, C is the 3rd stop. When a route day contains more than 26 stops, Headlight will simply reuse the map markers. That means routes with any number of stops will display properly.

What’s been missing is a single place that pulls everything together. And a means to search the available information. And most important, a simple guide to getting started with step-by-step lessons.

The new Help area address all of these problems.

1. Help

This single page consolidates the most common support topics into one place. The Guided Tour explains what Headlight does and Quick Start 101 teaches Headlight in simple step-by-step lessons. It also includes links to the company blog and Customer Support. If you have a question about Headlight, this is the perfect place to start.

2. Headlight 101: Quick Start

A step-by-step guide to learning Headlight. It’s a complete overhaul of the previous documentation and tutorials. Instead of talking about it, we encourage you to just watch the lessons.

3. Search

A search box is now available from every page on the website. It works like you’d expect. Just type in a word or phrase and you’ll see a list of related posts. This searches everything on the website: announcements, tutorials, articles, etc.

NEW FEATURE: Import Data Wizard

Easily the biggest feature in this release. It’s been completely overhauled to make importing files quick and easy. After you select a file, Headlight automatically matches fields and flags records that can’t be imported. Smaller jobs are geocoded in real-time, so map symbols appear instantly.

NEW FEATURE: Reorganized Setup Menu

My Info and Setup have been merged into a single item called “Setup”. All account information is quickly accessible from the four main tabs: My Info, Settings, Import/Export and Billing. It’s much easier to navigate.

NEW FEATURE: Unpinned Customer Filter

Quickly identify contacts that aren’t pinned to the map and correct them.

NEW FEATURE: Google Maps Geocoding

Getting an address mapped properly is called geocoding. Headlight now uses Google Maps for geocoding manual imports. It’s now fast enough that smaller files are geocoded in real-time.

A CSV file is a specially formatted plain text file which stores spreadsheet or basic database-style information in a very simple format, with one record on each line, and each field within that record separated by a comma. It’s important that the individual “records” within a CSV file NOT contain commas, as this may break the simple formatting when using the file in another application.

CSV files are often used as a simple way to transfer a large volume of spreadsheet or database information between programs, without worring about special file types. For example, transferring a home-made address book from Excel into a database program such as Filemaker Pro could be done by exporting the file as a CSV from Excel, then importing that CSV into Filemaker.

Creating a CSV file from spreadsheet data is very simple to do using Microsoft Excel.

Usage

1. Open your spreadsheet document and go to the File pull-down menu (or the Windows/Office round button menu in Office 2007) and choose Save As…
2. Change the “Save as type” or “Format” field to read: “CSV (Comma delimited)”.
3. Enter a name for the document and click Save.
4. To check the validity of your CSV file, open the new file from a plain-text reading program such as Notepad or TextEdit. Check to make sure there are no extra commas, other than between fields. Depending on what program you’re going to use the CSV file with, you may need to also remove any extra quotation marks or other formatting which Excel may have inserted.
5. Headlight will automatically match standard field names.

Quick Start lets you learn Headlight in an organized manner. Each lesson consists of a brief explanation, short video tutorial (typically 2 to 4 minutes) and a spot for questions and comments. These build progressively, but feel free to dive in anywhere or skip ones that aren’t needed immediately. You can always come back any time for a refresher course.
